persons. It is divided into five topic-related chapters; these can be read in the given sequence but are also

Der Atlantische Lachs e.V. The salmon - historical aspects describes the economic importance of the Rhine salmon, the causes of
the collapse of the salmon population prior to 1950 and the international measures undertaken to protect the
Rhine following the Sandoz pollution disaster in 1986.
In view of the positive results of initial projects designed to repopulate the Rhine with salmon, the registered

association ‘Der Atlantische Lachs e.V.’ (The Atlantic Salmon) was formed in 2001. The association, its

of the Atlantic salmon, and the issues of farming and genetic engineering of salmon.
As it is currently not yet possible to maintain a self-sustaining population without human intervention, the
Lachszentrum Hasper Talsperre is currently undertaking trials to breed a new strain of Rhine salmon. This
involves the catching of spawning fish, the fertilisation of eggs, rearing and release - all activities are outlined
in this section.

In the final chapter, Assessment and outlook, the current status of recent repopulation attempts as well
as their successes and problems are considered.
